Do you pay tax on Vinted sales in the UK?
Updated 6 November 2026.
Short answer: if you are clearing out your own wardrobe, you almost certainly owe nothing. If you buy things to sell on for a profit, the first £1,000 a year is tax-free. Over that, you need to tell HMRC.
Selling your own things
Selling clothes, shoes and other things you bought for yourself is not trading. You are usually selling them for less than you paid, so there is no profit to tax. Clothes also count as "wasting assets" for Capital Gains Tax, so they are normally exempt. The main exception is a single item that sells for more than £6,000.
Buying to resell is trading
HMRC looks at things it calls the "badges of trade". You are more likely to be trading if you:
- buy items with the plan to sell them for more, for example from charity shops, car boots or clearance sales
- sell often, or the same kind of item again and again
- repair, clean up or change items to sell them for more
- make things to sell
The £1,000 trading allowance
Your first £1,000 of trading income in a tax year is tax-free, and you do not need to tell HMRC about it. The £1,000 is what buyers paid you before costs, and it covers all your side hustles together, not just Vinted. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. More on the trading allowance.
If you go over £1,000
- Register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends.
- File your tax return online and pay by 31 January the year after that.
- You can take off either the £1,000 allowance or your real costs (what you paid for stock, postage, packaging), whichever is bigger.
- You pay Income Tax on the profit at your usual rate. Larger profits can also mean Class 4 National Insurance.
Missing the filing deadline costs at least £100, even if you owe no tax.
Keep records
Keep a note of what you paid for each item and what it sold for. That is what lets you claim your costs, and it is what HMRC asks for if it ever checks. Sidetally keeps this list for you and gives you the totals.
Check your own Vinted sales. Sidetally is free: sync your sales and see what is on its way, what is in your bank, and whether you owe tax.
